Hey awesome people at Automattic!
My name is Irwin Umban and I created this online resume to specifically apply for that amazing Happiness Engineer job of yours!
I am a strong believer in overdelivering and exceeding people’s expectation – that includes applying for this job right here 🙂
I gotta be honest with you. WordPress changed my life.
It helped me launched my first business successfully, at a time where I don’t really know how to write a single line of code or even thought that creating Website by myself is possible.
But after more than 3 years of experience playing with this incredible platform, I find myself do more than just creating my own website. Little did I know that I would have helped and touched many others lives and businesses, helping them become a great author and help some of them create and run a successful business. All made possible with WordPress.
But I wanted to make a bigger and greater impact. In fact I’ve set a goal to impact 10 million people by the time I turn 40, be it in business or personally.
So I believe that by really understanding WordPress better, and by constantly solving people’s problem as Happiness Engineer, I know I can provide greater value to all the people that I came across.
Also, I can really envision myself working with people at Automattic who came from such a diverse background, learning their story and culture. And I look forward to growing together while being my happy, fun and weird self.
One thing is for sure, I know I can do this Happiness Engineer job really well. To date, I have more than 4 years of web design experience from designing my own websites to designing websites for my clients using the WordPress platform.
But to be honest, I only have little knowledge about HTML, CSS and PHP. I’m not that good at coding, yet. And that’s because I focus my time and energy sharpening another high-value skill which is copywriting and Internet Marketing skills.
I’m good with setting up a profitable WordPress site using my copywriting skills and Internet Marketing skills. In fact, I deal with a lot of technical support ticket from customers who are in the Internet Marketing Industry who need help setting up their websites and integrating the various online marketing tools and plugins such as lead generation tools and email autoresponders.
Usually I will fire up my Notepad++ and Dreamweaver software so I can diagnose and write simple HTML and CSS codes to solve their problems. But most of the time, I will just inspect their code and tweak them accordingly.
I don’t normally know what code to write but I do know how to search online for blog posts or articles that will help me solve those particular problems. That’s how I operate and so far there is not a single problem that I fail to solve.
So I believe my problem-solving skills will come in handy when I work as a Happiness Engineer and beyond that.
On a personal level, I love to help people grow. And I’m blessed to have the opportunity to mix and learn from a lot of highly successful people throughout my life. And I can teach their mindsets, tools and strategies to your team so everyone can perform better, and live a happier and more fulfilling life.
the best material that I’ve come across so far is probably this book called “Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh“. I remembered it was 2014 when I read this book, and I even wrote down and stick their 10 core values on my bedroom wall.
The most memorable core value was “Delivering WOW Through Service” where they really embody WOWness in all aspect of their lives. That means doing things that may be unconventional and innovative, and going above and beyond what’s expected and literally making everyone say “WOW”. That includes dealing with their own people, clients and partners. I adapted this belief and it really makes my life better, and also put a smile on my clients face.
I also applied this value to my previous mobile spa business and my business sales grew months after months. My customers just love the simple and unexpected gifts that I send to them, from which I generate a lot of repeat business and free referrals.
And I like the “Create Fun and A Little Weirdness” part. Because that’s a big part of who I am 🙂 And if I’m having fun, I will naturally spread that fun and happiness vibe to everyone around me including my clients and customers.
It’s actually an experience I had with one of the “Customer Support People” at Siteground. I have used their hosting service for a long time and everytime I need some issue solved, they are very responsive and helpful to resolve the issue that I had, which includes tweaking some codes on my WordPress sites, or sharing me a link to a blog post or an article that is easy for me to understand and follow. The best part is when they are able to solve my issue within minutes of having the conversation with them! And you know what? I never failed to give them 5 stars!
Because of them, I knew more about WordPress, domain and hosting. And I also went from being mad customer to super chill after they did a great job lol. So in a way, I modelled their approach when I’m solving problems for my clients regarding their WordPress site setup. (That includes the not so pleasant one)
Hey, that’s me!
I’m huge on learning. I’m constantly learning everyday to improve all areas of my life. It’s a habit that my parents has instilled inside of me and it has never stopped since. I love to read and learn everyday.
Today I learn a lot through reading books and watching YouTube videos, but I credit my biggest learning curve to 1 thing:
Being in discomfort state.
It’s not a pleasant experience to have but seriously that’s where my biggest growth came from. I believe this is true for anyone in this planet. My mentor always taught me that discomfort means growth and that’s why I always try to seek discomfort and new challenges to tackle so I can continue to grow each and every day.
For example, back in 2016, I was so scared of going full time into entrepreneurship but I decide that if I don’t do it there and then, I would never be an entrepreneur.
So I took that risk, used up all my salary to set up a mobile spa business and expecting to run smoothly the first month.
But it didn’t. In fact I was growing so desperate that I only ate rice and egg pretty much everyday. And when it comes to getting new customer and growing my business, I read about all kinds of marketing strategy that I can find and implement them immediately. I ignored all my fears, pride and shame to cold call/email people including celebrities in order to get customers.
And I succeeded. Because of that incredible discomfort state, I had no choice but to learn and act fast. Or go back home with failure, disappointing my parents and community.
So that’s one story. I face countless other discomfort situations but I rather like them now since I know that whenever I had those moments, I am growing.
I really believe that I can be a great asset to your team and company, beyond just the role of Happiness Engineer.
But for a start, I really look forward to becoming a great Happiness Engineer, learning deeply about all of your products so I can serve you and your customer better.
With years of WordPress experience and ability to grow people, I firmly believe that I am the candidate you are looking for. I may not be that good at coding but that’s just a skill I can master over time.
I look forward to hearing your reply regarding my application and me contributing to the growth of your organization.

They are my clients under my 6k spa coaching program. Taught them a cold email marketing copywriting technique that enables them to get celebrities to try and endorse their spa for free. Massive boost in sales for their spa business. So happy for them.
Aside from that, their website generated a lot of online booking and corporate massage business, and I also taught them how to rank #1 or at least top 5 on Google Search for mobile spa related keyword.
2. LifeRedesigned.co with Coach Kar Fei from Mindvalley
I recreated his entire website with great attention to detail and his brand color/aesthetic.
Instead of the traditional Lead> Email Marketing > Seminar Sales Page, we decided to launch his seminar PLF style (Product Launch Formula by Jeff Walker)
Results? Sales conversion currently stands at 4%. Better conversion compared to traditional funnel that I normally did. And better conversion compared to doing free talk/preview. Less work, more results.
